Robert Voit

Robert Voit's pictures highlight cell phone companies inability to disguise "ugly" cell phone towers in rural areas. The towers are often seen as eye sores and the cell phone companies attempt to cure this problem by masking them as objects indigenous to that specific area. In his pictures he takes simple pictures of the towers, which after reading the article, clearly become visible that the trees and or cactuses are false. To provide service in areas that are thickly settled in the woods, a company created a "tree" that stands much higher than the other trees and is built of materials that do not seem natural. In another picture, a company built a "tower" directly next to a real tree and it looks like a fraud. In another, there is a cactus that is surrounded by metal wires and the cactus stands probably twenty feet high. Its seems are also showing on the cactus which makes one ponder, is this real? Overall, i enjoyed the pictures because it gave me a laugh and also an insight into the cell phone company business. I like the way he captured the pictures by exaggerating how long and abnormal the trees and cactuses look.

Update on Concentration

My concentration has gone through many shifts to become what it is now. Mainly, I have started to focus more on the movement of light in any kind of definition. I have shot streetlights, car lights, flame, lighters, and a lot of other things but I am still looking for other ideas. I looked online for ideas of things to shoot and how to play with light. In my research I found something that strongly interests me and I think I could really stretch my creativity in. I did it once and I have a few pictures of it but Light Writing is something that could take me to the pinnacle of the photography world. Some examples that I liked are:







I hope I can accomplish taking some pictures as good and most likely even better.

Carlos Diaz

The many layers are tricky and at first glance I did not notice that it was more than one media used. The pictures look as though they are one picture that is very busy with many lines going in different directions, but as I looked more closely I started to notice the different. The pictures also have some cartoon-like elements to them because of the softer edges in the pictures and also because some parts are slightly lighter in color. My favorite photo is the one of the Ferris wheel. I like this photo because the two photos fit together better. Because of the cartoon-like element to the photo, it seems that if it had a switch, everything would start moving and carnival music would be playing and the image would become very playful and exciting.

Over the past few weeks, my concentration has been all around the world. I decided to shift my concentration to light movement and I have the pictures to prove it

Urban Archeology

In the article on Urban Archeology that I recently read in Aperture, I saw and read about the work of Andrew Moore. I like the pictures of the buildings mainly because of what happened in those places rather than giving credit to the photographer. The photographer may earn some credit for finding those places and coming up with the idea of taking picture of such ruins, but I think the buildings themselves have their own character and story to tell. I was amazed that the buildings were torn and I can imagine that when the buildings were first made, they were very detailed. I also find how the theater building was so colorful. It was also interesting to me how Moore said that a friend of his used the stage to practice his routines. The picture of what seemed to be like a garage, at first glance made me think that it was a drawing rather than a photograph. the icicles gave it an interesting look. The angle that it was taken at made it seem as if the building was taken at a slant...

My Work

I have recently finished my mixed media project, and in it I cut up two pictures that I took of my cousin running and jumping. Then I used them as stencils to draw harder cut-ups of the shape. After that I placed them on a large sheet of paper and have the shape going from a jet black in the center, out to a lighter gray, then to the picture. After this to fill up the empty space, I painted it with water colors.
For my concentration, I am using a holga to capture movement in a series but on the same image. I plan on using the holga to capture dance and the different steps between it. It should come out nice and should look interesting. I also plan on shooting sports and other human actions, but I want to challenge myself to try and capture movement between different objects. Maybe looking into a ball bouncing, or a water balloon popping. Something interesting like those ideas, because you can only do so much with people.
